Electro sex for beginners: how e-stim works and how to play safely

Updated October 10, 2026

Electro sex, or e-stim, uses small electrical pulses to make muscles tingle, tense and contract. The sensation is unlike anything a vibrator or a hand can do: from a soft buzz to deep, rhythmic contractions that you do not control yourself. Done with the right equipment and a few firm rules, it is one of the most surprising kinds of play in the kink world. This guide explains how e-stim works, what you need to start, which accessories suit which body, and the safety rules that always apply.

How e-stim works

An e-stim unit, also called a stimulator or power box, sends low-voltage pulses through a cable to electrodes on or in the body. The current flows from one contact to another and makes the nerves and muscles in between react. The unit controls the pattern, the speed and the intensity, so the same accessory can feel like a gentle tingle one minute and a strong, pulsing squeeze the next. Erotic stimulators run on batteries and are designed for intimate use, which is a different thing from muscle trainers or anything that plugs into the mains.

Your first stimulator

Choose a unit made for erotic electro play, with a clear intensity control and a slow, gradual range. The ElectraStim KIX is a compact entry-level unit with simple controls that still has enough power for most ElectraStim accessories. The ElectraStim Flick Stimulator Pack is the most complete start: the slim EM60 unit with all cables and four adhesive pads, seven patterns and 24 intensity levels on one channel, rechargeable by USB. With two channels you can run two accessories at once or one partner's accessories independently: the ElectraStim Flick Duo has eight patterns and 25 intensity levels, and the ElectraStim Linx adds smartphone control, so a partner can take over the controls. All units are in E-Stim Units.

Unipolar or bipolar?

This is the one technical term you need to know. A unipolar electrode has a single contact, so you always use two of them and the current flows between them through the body: one pad on the thigh and one loop around the penis, for example. A bipolar accessory has both contacts built in, so the current flows within the toy itself and it works on its own, like most electro plugs. If an accessory is unipolar, you need a second electrode to complete the circuit.

Pads, loops, rings and plugs

Adhesive pads are the easiest start: you can place them on the thighs, buttocks or around the groin and feel what different spots do. The ElectraStim Slim Adhesive Pads measure 75 by 15 mm, fit narrow areas such as the base of the penis or the perineum, and can be reused up to six times by the same person.

For more focused play around the penis, the ElectraStim Penis Loops are two adjustable conductive rubber loops: one at the base, one just below the glans. The ElectraStim Aluminium Cock Ring Set gives you five rings from 36 to 44 mm, so you can find your fit. For anal play, the ElectraStim Rocker is a medical-grade silicone plug with built-in bipolar contacts, and the ElectraStim Midi Electro Butt Plug in aluminium has an insertable length of 7 cm and a circumference of 13 cm at its widest point. Other brands with a 3.5 mm jack connect to ElectraStim units through the ElectraStim 3.5 mm adapter. More accessories are in Electrodes and Accessories.

Gel, not lube

Electricity needs good contact with the skin. A thin layer of conductive gel on every contact gives a smoother, more even sensation and prevents sharp, prickly spots. Use ElectraStim Conductive Gel or ElectroShock Electrogel. Do not use silicone-based lube: it insulates and blocks the current.

Toys that work without a unit

Want to try the sensation before investing in a stimulator? The Ouch! E-Stim Vibrating Butt Plug combines vibration with electro pulses in one rechargeable silicone plug with a wireless remote, eight vibration modes and a curve towards the prostate.

Wands and zappers are a different style: short, sharp sensations used to tease, surprise or play with anticipation. The XR Brands Twilight Wand comes with five glass electrodes that glow during use and gives a crackling, prickling sensation as it moves over the skin. The XR Brands Electro Shank is shaped like a blade, with a dial for pulse duration and frequency, for fear play and teasing.

The safety rules

  • Below the waist only. Never place electrodes so that the current can flow across the chest, and never use e-stim on the head or neck.
  • Do not use e-stim if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device, a heart condition or epilepsy, or if you are pregnant. If you are unsure, ask your doctor first.
  • Only use equipment made for electro sex. Never connect anything to the mains, and never improvise with other devices.
  • Start at zero. Attach the electrodes, switch on and raise the intensity slowly. Turn it down to zero before you move or remove an electrode.
  • Intact skin only. Do not place electrodes on cuts, irritated skin or fresh piercings.
  • Stay present. The person controlling the unit stays with the person wearing the electrodes, and a safeword ends the scene immediately.

Electro play combines well with bondage, as long as the receiver can always signal. If you are new to restraint, read BDSM gear for beginners first. Clean insertable electrodes with a toy cleaner after every use, and store pads on their backing film.

Frequently asked questions

Does electro sex hurt?

It does not have to. At low intensity it feels like tingling or a gentle massage; higher up the muscles contract on their own. You control the level and can go back to zero at any moment. Sharp, prickly feelings usually mean too little gel or a loose contact.

What do I need to start with e-stim?

A stimulator made for erotic use, two electrodes or a bipolar accessory, and conductive gel. A pack such as the ElectraStim Flick includes the unit, cables and pads, so you can start straight away.

Can I use e-stim on my chest or nipples?

No. Current should never flow across the chest, because it passes near the heart. Keep all electrodes below the waist.

Can I use ElectraStim accessories with another unit?

ElectraStim accessories use a 2 mm connection. Units and toys with a 3.5 mm jack connect through an adapter. Always check the connection before you buy.

Which lube can I use with electro toys?

Use conductive gel on electrodes and a water-based lube for insertable toys. Silicone lube insulates and blocks the current.
