Urethral Sounds
A urethral sound is a smooth, slim rod, usually of stainless steel or silicone, that is slowly inserted into the urethra for the intense, unusual sensation of being filled from the inside. Sounding is an advanced practice for people who are curious about it and willing to be careful: it needs sterile hygiene, sterile lubricant and patience, and a beginner starts with the thinnest sizes.

Types of sounds
Straight steel dilators and Hegar sounds: smooth rods in a fixed diameter, the basic tool. The Steel by Shots Single Dilator 4mm Beginner (€7.95, 18.3 cm long), the Hegar Sound Double-Ended 4mm (€8.95) and the Single Dilator 8mm (€9.95).
Ribbed and beaded sounds: add texture, such as the Steel Ribbed Urethral Sound 8mm (17 cm insertable, €14.95) and the Multi-Beads Urethral Sound (24.7 cm insertable). For people with some experience.
Penis plugs: short plugs that sit in the tip of the urethra, sometimes with a glans ring, such as the Ouch! Metal Beginners Urethral Plug 4mm (9 cm, €24.95) or the Metal Penis Plug 10mm.
Silicone sets: flexible and softer, often in rising sizes, such as the Ouch! Urethral Beginners Plug Set, the Urethral Spiral Screw Set Beginners (3 to 6 mm) and Advanced (7 to 10 mm), and the Ouch! Urethral Sounding Dilator Set (3.5 to 7.5 mm).
Vibrating and e-stim sounds: the XR Brands Dark Rod and Cadence vibrating sounds, and ElectraStim Silicone Noir sounds of 5 and 7 mm that connect to an e-stim unit.
Sets and specials: the Steel by Shots Rosebud Sound Set with eight pieces (€77.95), urethral stretchers, and ManCage Model 15 and 16 chastity cages with a built-in sound of 3.5 mm.
Size for beginners
Start with the thinnest: 4 mm or less in diameter, smooth steel or soft silicone, without texture. Many people stay between 4 and 8 mm. Moving up is done in small steps over several sessions; there is no need to go large.
Hygiene and technique
Hygiene is essential, because the urethra is easily irritated. Clean and disinfect the sound before every use; stainless steel can be boiled. Wash your hands and the penis, and use a sterile, water-based lubricant made for sounding, such as the Fuck & Fist Sound Lube (80 ml, €10.95), ideally from a fresh, clean bottle. With the penis held upright and relaxed, let the sound glide in mostly under its own weight with very light guidance, and never force or push. Stop at any sharp pain, burning or bleeding. Urinating afterwards helps flush the urethra. If you have a urinary infection, irritation or any doubt, do not sound and ask a doctor.
Clean sounds with a toy cleaner or disinfectant and keep a sterile water-based lubricant for sounding only.
Frequently asked questions
What size urethral sound should a beginner use?
About 4 mm in diameter or smaller, smooth and without texture, in stainless steel or soft silicone, such as the Steel by Shots Single Dilator 4mm Beginner.
Steel or silicone sounds?
Steel is smooth, heavy enough to glide in under its own weight and can be boiled. Silicone is softer and more flexible but cannot always be sterilised as thoroughly.
Which lubricant should I use for sounding?
A sterile, water-based lubricant made for sounding, such as a dedicated sound lube. Never use saliva, oils or silicone lubricant.
How do I clean a urethral sound?
Wash with warm water and soap, then disinfect before every use; stainless steel sounds can be boiled for a few minutes. Store them clean and dry.
Is urethral sounding dangerous?
It carries real risks such as irritation and infection if done without hygiene or with force. Start very thin, use sterile lubricant, never force, and stop at pain or bleeding.
Can I combine sounding with chastity?
Yes. The ManCage Model 15 and 16 have a built-in sound, and the XR Brands Repressor in our chastity department combines a steel cage with a urethral insert.
