Openings and fit
Look at the openings first. Hoods with open eyes and mouth are the easiest to wear for longer, while covered eyes or a closed mouth increase the feeling of submission. Perforated hoods such as the Doc Johnson Black Ops let air pass through. Leather moulds to the head over time, neoprene stretches and is easy to wash, and mesh is light. Measure around your head and compare it with the sizing on the product page.
Wearing a hood safely
The nose and mouth must always have free airflow; never cover or tape them. Agree on a nonverbal signal, as speech may be muffled, and stay with your partner the whole time. Keep first sessions short, remove the hood if your partner feels hot, dizzy or anxious, and keep the keys close for hoods with locks. Wash neoprene by hand and condition leather regularly.
Are pup and pig hoods only for pet play?
They are made for it and fit well with puppy and pet play gear, but many people wear them simply for the look.
Can I combine a hood with a gag?
Many hoods have a mouth opening for a gag. Never combine a closed hood with a gag.
