Which handcuffs and restraints are best? Fur, leather, metal and under-bed restraints compared
For a first time, pick soft cuffs that open in a second: fur-lined handcuffs with a quick-release button or padded neoprene cuffs are forgiving on the wrists and need no key in an emergency. For longer scenes and for partners who like to pull, wide leather cuffs with D-rings are the most comfortable and versatile choice, while metal handcuffs suit roleplay and experienced players who want a hard, unyielding hold. If your bed has no posts, an under-mattress restraint system is the easiest way to tie someone down.
Below you find the best options per situation, a comparison table, hogties and spreader bars, and the safety routine that belongs with every restraint. Every model mentioned is in our cuffs and restraints section.
The best handcuffs and restraints by situation
Best first metal handcuffs
The Ouch Beginner's Handcuffs are steel cuffs with a quick-release mechanism, so a misplaced key never leaves anyone stuck. Locking and opening are simple enough to do with one hand.
Best fur handcuffs
The Ouch Beginner's Furry Handcuffs put faux fur between the steel and the skin, which takes the pressure off during a full scene. A quick-release button opens them without the key.
Best metal handcuffs for roleplay
The Crushious Lust Metal Handcuffs have the weight and look of the real thing, a safety opening for quick release and two spare keys in the box. The metal is nickel-free and splashproof.
Best padded cuffs for beginners
The XR Brands Soft Neoprene Handcuffs combine the shape of classic cuffs with a soft neoprene lining that spreads the pressure. They adjust fully to slim and broad wrists and open with a quick-release button.
Best without any metal
The Doc Johnson Premium Silicone Wrist Cuffs are moulded as one seamless piece with no hardware to snag or rub. At 80 g they are the lightest option here, for light bondage where comfort comes first.
Best value for wrists and ankles
The Ouch Adjustable Hand and Ankle Restraint Set is soft, waterproof nylon with straps that adjust independently. Link the wrists, anchor the set to a bed frame or cross-tie.
Best leather cuffs to start a collection
The Ouch Leather Restraint Cuffs with D-Ring are stitched leather with metal buckles, six adjustment holes per strap and a D-ring on each cuff. Clip them together, to a spreader bar or to the bed.
Best for long sessions
The Red Leather Ultra Handcuffs are 6 cm wide, so the pressure spreads across the wrist instead of one narrow band. They are made in Europe from vegetable-tanned cowhide and also fit the ankles.
Best complete leather set
The Red Leather Ankle and Hand Restraint Set gives you four matching cuffs of the same construction, so wrists and ankles hold the same way in a spread-eagle or a hogtie.
Best metal for experienced players
The Steel by Shots Darby Style Handcuffs follow the classic British design: the key screws into the lock and each cuff closes in five positions. Release takes a few deliberate turns, so this is not a cuff for quick exits.
Best under-bed restraints
The XR Brands Lover's Bed Restraint System slides under the mattress, stays hidden until you play and has adjustable straps with D-rings as anchor points. The Crushious Adjustable Under-Bed Restraint Set uses nylon webbing with velcro cuffs and goes on without tools. For a bed with posts, the Ouch Bed Post Bondage Restraint Kit clamps four extensions onto them.

Hogties and spreader bars
A hogtie connects wrist cuffs to ankle cuffs behind the back, so you need two pairs of cuffs with rings first. The Ouch Denim Hogtie is a four-way connector with stainless steel quick-release clasps, and each strap adjusts on its own. The Ouch Milan Hogtie System has four bonded leather straps that clip to cuffs you already own. A hogtie is demanding for shoulders, hips and breathing, especially face down, so keep it to a few minutes and release at the first sign of discomfort.
A spreader bar keeps legs or arms apart. The Red Leather Compact Spreader Bar extends from 35 to 60 cm and has padded leather cuffs for a circumference of 23 to 38 cm, on wrists or ankles. Start at a modest width and open it gradually. More lengths are under spreader bars.
How to choose
Fit. Every cuff should sit snugly with room for one finger between cuff and skin. Ankles are wider than wrists, so check the adjustment range of a set you want to use on both.
Material. Fur, neoprene and velcro are the most forgiving and the fastest on and off. Leather spreads the pressure best once broken in and lasts for years. Metal does not give at all and presses on the wrist bones, so keep it for short scenes without pulling.
Release. For first scenes choose a quick-release button, velcro or a buckle you can open blind. With metal, keep the key and a spare in one fixed place.
Connection points. D-rings make cuffs part of a system: link them to a hogtie, a spreader bar, the bed or bondage furniture. Complete sets are under bondage kits.
Safety: before, during and after
- Agree first. Talk about limits, pick a safeword and add a non-verbal signal, such as dropping a ball, for when a gag is in.
- Keep safety scissors within reach. The Ouch Bondage Safety Scissors are 17 cm long with a rounded tip that slides under a strap without cutting skin. The XR Brands MS Snip has a carabiner handle you can clip to a belt. Scissors do not open metal handcuffs, so the key stays nearby too.
- Check circulation. Every few minutes, ask how hands and feet feel and press a fingernail: the colour should return quickly. Tingling, numbness, cold, pale or bluish skin means you loosen or release at once.
- Protect the nerves. Never let anyone pull hard against metal cuffs or hang their weight on wrist cuffs. Hands behind the back strain the shoulders, so start in front.
- Set time limits. Twenty minutes is plenty for a first scene, a hogtie much shorter. Nothing goes around the neck, and nobody sleeps in restraints.
- Stay present. Never leave a restrained person alone, not even for a moment, and play sober.
Cleaning and care
Rinse metal handcuffs with warm water and a toy cleaner, then dry them well, lock included. Wipe leather with a damp cloth, let it dry away from heat and treat it with leather balm now and then. Wipe neoprene and nylon with mild soap and let them dry completely. Wash silicone with warm water and soap, and spot clean fur linings. Store everything dry.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best handcuffs for beginners?
Soft cuffs with a quick release, such as fur handcuffs with a release button or padded neoprene cuffs. They are gentle on the wrists and open in a second.
Are fur handcuffs safe?
The lining softens the edge, but the core is still metal. Close them with room for one finger, do not pull against them and keep the release button or key within reach.
Leather or metal cuffs: which is better?
Leather is better for comfort, long scenes and partners who move or pull, because the wide strap spreads the pressure. Metal is better for roleplay and a strict feel, but only in short scenes without pulling.
How do under-bed restraints work?
Straps run under the mattress and end in a cuff at each corner. The weight of the mattress holds them in place, so they work on beds without posts and disappear afterwards.
How tight should cuffs be?
Snug enough that a hand cannot slip out, loose enough that one finger fits between cuff and skin. Check again after a few minutes, because hands and feet can swell during a scene.
What if a handcuff key gets lost?
Use the quick-release button or safety opening if the cuffs have one. That is why beginners should choose such models and keep a spare key in a fixed place.
