Bondage tape and ribbon bondage: ties step by step for beginners

Zaktualizowano 12 października 2026

Bondage tape and bondage ribbon are the quickest way to find out whether being tied up does something for you. No knots to learn, no rope burns, no half hour of practice before the scene can start. This guide is practical: how each tie is done, step by step, how tight is too tight, and how you get someone out again in seconds. For an overview of all ropes and tapes in our range, see the category page rope and bondage tape.

What bondage tape and bondage ribbon are

Bondage tape is a soft PVC tape, a few centimetres wide, that sticks only to itself. It does not grab skin or hair, it leaves no glue behind, and it stretches slightly as you wrap, so each layer hugs the one below. A roll such as the Ouch! non-sticky bondage tape of 17.5 metres is enough for several wrist and ankle ties or one larger wrap.

A bondage ribbon is a wide, smooth fabric band. The Ouch! silky bondage ribbon measures 167 by 6 cm: long enough to tie a pair of wrists or serve as a blindfold, wide enough to spread the pressure. Ribbon bondage feels softer and more romantic than tape and is popular for the gift-wrapped look: tying your partner up like a present is about as playful as ribbon sex gets.

Why tape and ribbon are easier than rope

  • No knots: tape holds by layering, so a beginner gets a neat, even wrap the first time.
  • Wide contact: a wide band spreads pressure over more skin than a thin rope.
  • Fast release: tape can be unwound or cut in one stroke, and a ribbon tied with a bow comes loose with one pull.

The trade-off is strength. Tape is meant to hold a body part against itself, not to anchor someone to a bed frame under force. Pulling hard can tear it or make it slide.

Before you start: consent, safeword and signals

Talk first. Agree on what will be tied, how long, and what is off limits. Choose a safeword that stops everything (many people use "red") and a word that means slow down ("yellow"). If the mouth will be covered or filled, the safeword no longer works, so agree a nonverbal signal as well: dropping a set of keys or a small ball held in the hand, or three hums in a row. Test the signal before you begin.

Lay out what you need within reach: the tape or ribbon, and bondage safety scissors with a rounded tip that slides under the wrap without cutting skin. Never leave a tied person alone, not even for a moment.

Step by step: the most useful ties

Wrists together in front

  • Step 1: Ask your partner to hold the wrists side by side, palms facing each other.
  • Step 2: Start the tape on the outside of one wrist and wrap around both, keeping the tape flat and untwisted.
  • Step 3: Wrap four to six layers, each overlapping the last by about half its width. Pull gently: the tape should hug, not squeeze.
  • Step 4: Press the end firmly onto the layer below. No knot is needed.
  • Step 5: Do the two-finger check: you should be able to slide two fingers between the tape and the skin.

Ankles

The same method as the wrists. Wrap above the ankle bone, not over it, so the bone does not take all the pressure.

Arms behind the back

Do not pull the elbows together: it puts heavy strain on the shoulders. Instead, ask your partner to fold the forearms behind the back so that each hand rests near the opposite elbow, forming a box. Wrap the tape around both forearms, between the wrist and the elbow, in four to six flat layers. Keep away from the upper arm, where a nerve runs close to the surface. Shoulders tire quickly in this position, so start with ten minutes and ask regularly.

Frog tie

The frog tie folds one leg and holds it bent. Your partner lies on the back, bends a knee and brings the heel towards the buttock. Wrap tape around the lower leg and the thigh together in three bands: one near the ankle, one halfway, and one a hand's width from the knee. Leave the back of the knee itself free. Repeat on the other leg if you want both bent.

Mummification-style wrap

Full or partial mummification means wrapping the body, often from ankles to chest, with the arms against the sides. It takes several rolls; the three-roll pack of black bondage tape is made for this. Keep in mind:

  • PVC does not breathe. A large wrap gets hot quickly, so keep the first session to 15 minutes and have water ready.
  • Wrap the chest loosely enough that your partner can take a full deep breath.
  • Never wrap the neck or the head. The face stays completely free.
  • Many people wrap over a thin layer of clothing or a sheet to control heat and keep it comfortable.

Using tape and ribbon as a blindfold or gag

A ribbon makes a good blindfold. Fold it once lengthwise, lay it over the eyes, and tie it at the back of the head with a bow, never with a knot that tightens. It must cover the eyes only, never the nose. If you prefer something made for it, a satin eye mask stays in place better; there are more in blindfolds.

Tape over the eyes is possible, but only over a folded cloth or eye pads: tape directly on the eyelids and eyebrows is unpleasant to remove. As a gag we advise beginners against tape. If you do it, put a single strip across the closed lips only, with the nose fully free, never when your partner has a cold or a blocked nose, never with anything in the mouth, and always with the nonverbal signal agreed. A ribbon pulled between the teeth (a cleave gag) is milder, but the same rules apply.

Tape as costume and body art

Bondage tape is also a costume material. A tape bikini, crossing lines over the chest, a striped pattern on the legs: it looks bold and photographs well. Some people combine it with body painting for BDSM-themed photos. Use cosmetic body paint made for skin, let it dry completely before taping, and expect the tape to lift some paint when it comes off. Brightly coloured rolls such as the 20 metre pink PVC tape stand out on camera; black and red are the classic choices.

How tight is too tight

CheckFineRelease at once
Two-finger ruleTwo fingers slide under the wrapNo room under the tape
ColourNormal skin colour beyond the wrapPale, blue or dark red
FeelingWarm, can wiggle fingers or toesTingling, numbness, cold
MovementCan open and close the handWeak grip or a hand that will not move

Ask about tingling every few minutes and squeeze a finger or toe now and then: the colour should return within two seconds. Numbness is a nerve warning, not something to push through.

Removal, reuse and cleaning

Small ties can simply be unwound. For larger wraps or in a hurry, cut. Slide the rounded tip of the scissors under the tape on the outside of the limb, away from the inner wrist, and cut along the length. A pair with a clip, such as the XR Brands MS Snip bondage scissors, can hang on a belt or bedpost so it is never out of reach.

Unwound tape can be rolled up and used again; cut pieces still work for short wrist or ankle wraps. Wash tape and ribbon in lukewarm water with a little mild soap, let them air dry, and store them away from sunlight and heat. Wash before sharing gear with another partner, and do not wrap over broken or irritated skin.

When to step up to cuffs or rope

Frequently asked questions

What is ribbon bondage?

Ribbon bondage means tying with a wide, smooth fabric ribbon instead of rope. It is gentle on the skin, quick to tie with a bow, and popular for blindfolding and the gift-wrapped look.

Does bondage tape stick to skin or hair?

No. Bondage tape sticks only to itself, so it peels off without pulling hair and leaves no residue.

How tight should bondage tape be?

Tight enough to hold, loose enough to slide two fingers underneath. Tingling, numbness, cold or a colour change mean release at once.

Can I use bondage tape as a gag?

We advise beginners against it. If you do, cover the closed lips only, keep the nose completely free, agree a nonverbal signal and never leave your partner alone.

Can bondage tape be reused?

Yes. Unwind it carefully, roll it up and wash it with mild soap and lukewarm water. Cut pieces can still be used for short wraps.
